Founded by Antonella Palagano, a woman of the Poor Clares, the hospital originally consisted of two buildings joined by an arch. The chapel, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist in 1470, gave rise to the name of the community: San Giovanni di Lionelli. It has undergone many renovations. Its original majolica tile floor is spectacular.
