During Ottoman rule, after the Christians, led by the philosopher Dionysus, revolted and were expelled from the fortress in 1611, it became a metropolitan church and was named a cathedral. The church, dating from the Byzantine period, was destroyed in 1822 during the siege by Tepedelenli Ali Pasha and rebuilt in 1832.
An extremely beautiful and historic temple, quite clean and well-maintained, definitely worth a visit for everyone.
The historic temple has suffered damage and restoration work is underway.
