Igreja de São Mateus is a tourist attraction located in São Mateus.
One of the more remarkable and iconic ruins of the many to be found on the Faial island. The church has been rebuilt couple of times but ultimately succumbed to its current state after the 1998 earthquake. If you are travelling throgh this area you should take a few moments to admire this majestic ruin.
Impressive ruins of a church, full of noisy pigeons. We enjoyed taking the time to stop and look at it! Very small parking lot so be careful. We would have enjoyed to get an information sign to learn a little bit about this church history.
Interesting ruin of a church after earthquake of 1998.
