Well worth the stop and don't forget to check out the crypts and the stunning small underground chapel (entrance via the book shop, €2.50 donation requested). I went around 6pm to kill the hours before acceptable eating time in Rome and loved it. Very calm and serene, with beautiful mosaics and a nun playing organ music.

It's gorgeous and so peaceful, right in the heart of the city. You absolutely have to check out the dungeons under the basilica; they've got Roman ruins and this awesome Orthodox chapel with incredible mosaics and frescoes. It's a perfect cool spot to chill and relax on a hot day.
