Of course you should visit the cathedral when in Pistoia. The baptistery is not freely accessible. Next door is the cathedral museum which has some archeological artifacts and several paintings - took me aroun 20min to see the museum.

It contains surprisingly large amount of art works, in particular the silver altar that is in a separate chapel. Get the audio guide and you will learn so much more about the art works and history of the cathedral. For example Boccaccio’s master, Dante’s close friend, Cino da Pistoia is buried there.
