A beautiful monastery that resembles a fortified castle with extremely high walls. It is said that John the beloved disciple of Jesus wrote the book of Revelation in the nearby cave. The monastery has a priceless museum that houses ancient books, manuscripts and a vast array of religious artifacts, icons and religious relics.

The monastery itself is impressive and quiet, which I liked. Unfortunately, the atmosphere felt cold, more stares than hospitality. Come for the place and history, not for warmth. Free entrance.
