An impressive church with an extraordinary altar featuring carved figures made of old oak and many fascinating windows in different colors. Just pause and take it all in. It's best to visit the church on a sunny day, when the colors of the windows shine even more brightly.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Kalkar is known, among other things, for its nine original altars carved from wood, mostly from the 16th century. The main altar is unique, 6 m high and 5 m wide, with more than 200 carved figures. Unique works by masters of that time, which are not seen anywhere else. Great.
Nowhere else in Germany can you find such a fascinating series of late medieval carved altarpieces. A visit to this church can be combined with a visit to the nearby Xanten Cathedral.
