Kirchenruine Virgilienberg
Matthias-Von-Lexer-Weg 1, 9360 Friesach, Austria
Kirchenruine Virgilienberg is a tourist attraction located in Friesach.
Beautiful place. Also great for relaxing. After a short, steep climb of about 5 minutes, we had already reached our destination.
The Virgilienberg church ruins, formerly a fortified provostry, have a current structure dating from the reconstruction after a fire in 1309. They fell into final disrepair after another fire in 1816 and have remained a church ruin ever since. In the Middle Ages, the provostry housed a library of European renown.
Beautiful ruins, fantastic views of Friesach and the surrounding area! We had previously visited the castle construction site and walked from there to the ruins. A lovely walking path!
